The title Spitfire has dual meaning & inspiration for the piece:
1) The word spitfire describes a highly emotional and quick-tempered person. The aggressive, nonstop nature of the composition respresents this well.
2) The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was used by the Royal Air Force throughout the World War II. It served in several roles, including interceptor, photo-reconnaissance, fighter-bomber, carrier-based fighter, and trainer.
Commissioned by Dr. Brian Meixner, "Spitfire" was premiered at the Southeast Regional Tuba & Euphonium Conference at the University of North FLorida in Jacksonville, FL on March 15, 2013.
